Title: Any ideas of model date and MSRP?
Post by: ArmaLaser on January 29, 2013, 08:45:13 PM
I'm trying to find out more about the history of my Zodiac Chronograph pictured below.  Any ideas what years this model was made? What was the retail price back then?

Welcome to the forum!

Looks mid 70s to me.  Personally it's the best looking piece of this style that I've seen from Zodiac and yours is in excellent condition.  Has it ever been worn?

Some interesting features on this too.  12 hour chrono with no running seconds and a date is probably my favourite chrono layout.  Also the part pulsations/part tachymetre bezel is cool.  No idea on MSRP but I'd say it's worth a thousand, more if it's been recently serviced (although it looks like it's barely been touched, so that seems unlikely).  Asking prices on eBay for chronos like this are all over the place as sellers hope to catch the interest of clueless buyers so I've seen prices up to 2000 for this sort of watch but those never sell until their prices are dropped to at least the 1500 range if they're in good shape.  Also whether they have the original crown/pushers/bracelet/crystal all depend as well.

How long have you had the watch for?

Thanks very much!  Glad to be here and I've gotten bitten by the Zodiac bug pretty badly.  I really love this watch, has great wrist presence and feel. I'm amazed at how well-designed the bracelet and dial are.

Bought this from another forum member with a smooth and pleasant transaction.  I think it's had an extra scratch or two since the posted pic was taken but still in almost-NOS shape, looks like it's just a few months old!

I've had it for about 2 months now and am "digging" its 70s-ness.

When I mentioned MSRP I really wanted to know what it sold for back in the 1970's.  I'm guessing it was probably $200-$300.  Reason I ask is that it's a really great quality watch, I'm curious to see how it was priced compared to its contemporaries of the day like the Speedmaster.  I'd think it wasn't too far off in quality to what the more commonly known chronographs were at that time.

I did end up buying another identical case and dial as I'm trying to build a "daily wearer" of this series.  I scored a set of chrono buttons and a crown yesterday so all I need are hands and a movement and I'll have 2 of them!  Here are some pics of that one.
