Title: Aeronaut GMT?
Post by: Blubarb on February 27, 2016, 11:11:20 AM
Another newbie question I am afraid.

I have searched the catalogues to see if Zodiac ever produced an Aeronaut GMT with just "aeronaut" on the dial below the logo. All I have managed to find is the Aerospace GMT.  Was there such a beast produced?  ;D

It was the Aeronaut Jet or the Aerospace GMT. Have a look in the Gallery.

:what :wtf    BUTCH, the watch he has looks like a real GMT complete with correct bezel and hands BUT his dial says only "aeronaut" at the top.it has the "later" short blunt square end GMT hand. it is not a 24 hour numbered dial like the JET. it is weird, I don't think it is the right DIAL for the rest of the watch.it looks like a GMT dial. maybe a re-dial with the wrong word applied ?  I have owned both and something just doesn't add up.  just my observations, JON P

Thanks, guys. Well, that's that then. Back to the catalogues to see the correct dial and then try and track one down. Can you point me in the right direction within the catalogues or elsewhere to help identify the right dial?  The hunt is on.

check with our member here, dmh, he sells a lot of parts, he might have just what you need. look at the catalogs and gallery, your dial used to be a GMT, the re-dialer just put the wrong script back on it!! doesn't sound like the story about where the watch came from is very truthful. buyer beware. good luck, my friend.

There have been a few popping up on eBay lately. BWG MAY have one too.

Zaniac, in an old post, made reference to a Zodiac dial that "...simply says Aeronaut, no GMT. And it's similar to the 24 hour watch how they originally were titled Aeronaut, than changed to Aerospace...." I have searched the catalogues, the gallery and elsewhere and can find no reference to any Zodiac Aeronaut such as the one Zaniac referred to and the one I posted a pic of. I think the assertion is incorrect and is simply an incorrect redial.

What I have found is:

1. The Hermetic Jet Aeronaut is a 24 hour watch with no rotating bezel

AND

2. The Aerospace Jet is a GMT with a rotating bezel

Therefore the watch I purchased never existed with that dial. It should have "Aerospace GMT" on the dial below the logo and on checking "the Gallery" photos I would say the silver dial 11-GMT2.

Am I getting closer?  I think so.  :coolsmiley

I think you are referring to this, Jon?

Question is will it fit? My research to this point says it should.

your research is 100% correct. the "24 hour" dial watch was not a GMT. you have a GMT with a WRONG REDIAL, it is as simple as that. isn't the world of zodiac collecting crazy and confusing!!

IT WILL FIT, no problem. it is SOLD, I hope  it was YOU who got it! once the watch is serviced/restored with a new dial you will have a winner for sure. the prices on these keep going up. the GMT is an important part of Zodiac history. the hands on yours date it to mid-late 1960s- early 1970s. the very early models had slim hands with small red arrow tip GMT hand. there was also a solid gold bezel GMT in the mid 1970s, only offered a year or so. I owned one of these for a couple of years, ended up selling it to a member here. good looking GMT with jubilee bracelet with gold plated trim on the bracelet and buckle.  sounds like your GMT project is coming together. you remind me of myself about 10 years ago. my collection started out with a sea wolf I bought new in the army PX back in 1968.. a whole 55.00 new! BTW, I still have it ,restored 3-4 years ago by BWG. it will stay with me forever.

 :godfather;

Thanks for the heads up there, Jon. Yep, it's on it's way to me and then BWG. When I get my SWs back from BWG I'll throw up a photo of where I am at the moment. I suppose what I am really after at the moment is a white/silver dial no date. It's a crazy and confusing business at times all right but to tell the truth I wouldn't want it any other way.  :wehe

Hey guys.  New to the forum.  I'm an Enicar Seapearl and Sherpa collector...but do come across other watches.  I came across a Zodiac Aeronaut, and wanted to revisit the thread.  I just joined the forum so I could find out about this watch.  Not much info anywhere.

A pic is below, front and back.  I found, and just purchased, an original Zodiac advert from 1964 that PLAINLY shows this exact watch (no G.M.T., no Jet, no Hermetic, no Aerospace...just Aeronaut) but with a white dial.  I should have that in the mail in a few days.  I can find virtually no references to the model, except for the odd advert from 1964 (found one or two other examples online) and one or two examples (doing an image search) that are WAY OVER POLISHED or in crappy condition.  And, of course this thread which I understood to mean that none of you believe the Aeronaut was a thing.

Anyway, I'm looking to sell this watch and joined the forum so I could try to figure out how much this might be worth.  It's part of a box of Zodiac watches, cases, parts, etc, that I came across recently.  This is the first one I'll be putting up for sale now (along with the advert...I bought it literally five minutes ago on eBay), the others to follow.  My watchmaker is going through the couple of the complete watches that were in the mix (mostly Sea Wolfs, nothing that I couldn't find lots of info on).  This is just the first one he finished.  He had never seen one either, but had no doubt it was legit.

My guess is that this model had a short run and was split into the Hermetic Jet Aeronaut and Aerospace G.M.T. lines.  Any thoughts?

Thanks!
Jeremy

Very interesting. Thank you for input.
Regarding the watch. It looks absolutely legit to me. Including bracelet.
May be second hand is incorrect. Usually long side should be longer. But back tip is shorter. Probably replacement from other watch.
According to hand shape, it is first generation of GMT. So it is possible it marked as Aeronaut. Which was replaced by Aerospace as they did on 24h Hermetic line.

I'll post a close up pick of the 1964 advert when I get it in the mail later this week.  Butch, what do you think about the seconds hand issue brought up by the other commenter?
Title: Re: Aeronaut GMT?
Post by: Butch on October 19, 2017, 01:04:27 PM
They did not have the oblong thing on the end. Ever. Second hands get mangled during a service and can be replaced by anything that is available. I would not loose any sleep over that.

Regular second hand from Sea Wolf will fit.

Here is the newspaper advert from 1964, showing the dial and bezel configuration, but with a white dial.  In the ad, they call it the "Aeronaut GMT 1762".  What's a fair price to expect for this?  Should I use this forum?

Thanks!
Jeremy

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and recently found this exact Zodiac Aeronaut for sale in a vintage shop here in Budapest. What do you guys think the right price would be for this watch? They are selling it for 500 euro.

Thanks in advance!

Depends from model, originality, condition and service history.
If serviced, original and clean, 500 euro is not a bad price.

Thank you! It seems legit to me, marked crown, condition is alright i think. Only thing is that the bezel does not tick, it feels like it is sliding rather than properly clicking. Here are some pics of that watch.

Ads from 1966 and 1967 show it as Aerospace, as do the catalogs. I don't know. That dial does look original. Who really knows?
