Post by: golfmaster03 on May 13, 2010, 02:52:15 PM
could anyone tell me what model watch this is:
i have attached a image.
it is 9ct gold.
there is a full hallmark in the Dennison case, and 375 stamped on the other portion.

also, if anyone knows, could they give me a estimate of how much it is worth, bearing in mind it has no strap.

That looks like an old woman's Zodiac from the UK. You see a lot of them in the 9K and 10K cases. Probably from the 1940 maybe? For some reason I am unaware of, there was a lot of Zodiac movements brought into the UK and cased there in the 9/10K cases.

As for value of a woman's watch, let me share my stock answer on that. I am sure it is not what you wanted to hear and is only my opinion.

For the most part, ladies watches are not collected. They usually are worth either:
1) the scrap value of the gold and/or case mounted jewels.
2) whatever a buyer is willing to pay.

Having said that, often I get an email back that says they took it to a local watchmaker or jeweler and he said it was worth a gazillion dollars! My stock response is, "Take it back to them and tell they they can have it for half that amount." Funny thing is, no one has ever emailed me back and said the local took them up on that offer.

Butch is definitely right.  Unfortunately, in the current market, the gold melt value of timepieces has far exceeded their value as a watch.  This is true for almost all ladies watches (since there are no hardcore collectors for them out there to drive up their value due to demand) and the majority of men's solid gold watches now too (it has to be a really special model or big name to be worth more than gold it seems).

I have seen some really sharp watches get scrapped by jewelers in my area recently, simply because they could not get anyone to offer them near what melt value was and they needed the capital.
It is really kind of sad to see all of the watches that have been scrapped over the last few years during the gold frenzy...
