Post by: Doogie on May 20, 2014, 02:00:44 PM
On a GMT is the second hour hand set for general military time or greenwich mean time... I thought GMT stood for greenwhich mean time.. (Feeling stupid)

:what :wehe          not a stupid question at all, lets see who has the best answer! some GMT watches have an adjustable gmt hand, can be set to a different time zone. some do not adjust, they simply point at the military time. bezel can be used to set a second zone. i am sure it was designed to be a very useful feature for some, but it is really useless to ME! looks neat though and people ask what the extra hand is for. 24hr dial is neat too, next time you are wearing one and someone asks the time, show them the dial and watch the look on their face!

Doog! Rather than go through all that typing... Just go to the other site and look on the User's Manual tab for the GMT booklet and learn how it works TWO different ways.

I guess ill say why I asked.. I sold a GMT and the buyer told me I had the hand on wrong and he "zeroed them out".
When I asked what he meant he told me that GMT was general military time and at midnight the red hour hand should also be at 12...

That is correct. At midnight, all hands should be pointed at the 12. If the bezel is at the home position, the arrow (24) on it will be above the 12. That is midnight or 2400 hours. The red hand will move half as fast as the hour hand throughout the day tracking to the bezel's "military time".

Now, you can also use the bezel in an offset position to have the red hand used for time in a 2nd timezone. An example of this is to move the 5 on the bezel to 12 on the dial. Now the red hand will tell you the GMT timezone time (-5 from ET) by using the red hand as the hour hand, and the minute hand of course. I actually did a project with the UK for a year once and often wore a GMT just for this purpose. You see, our noon on the east cost is their EOD. I had to get it done quick before I lost them to the pub.

And you made me type it all out anyway, huh?   ;)
