Title: Should you be an Olympos Fan?
Post by: Butch on December 11, 2009, 12:30:26 PM
Yet another attempt at trying to convince you guys that there is more to Zodiacs than Sea Wolfs and GMTs. You guys really make me work at this.

Do you like the Olympos? Have you considered the purchase of one? This watch has long held intrigue for the collector due to its unique case design, it's crown at 2:00, the original "mystery dial" (which it is not, but perhaps more on this later), the later quad dial version, and in the 70's the ultra-hip SST version, both "mod" (a phrase that you had to be there to truly appreciate) and dress versions.

Like the fins on the cars in the 1950's, can you see the differences across the years in similar models?

FYI, the right upper and right middle ones are from my collection.

;D ;D ;D i have always liked their styling and i have bid on more than one in the past but lost! they are one of the cleanest designs of the old zodiacs, i just hope in the future i might luck out. my main love is diver watches--i have some beautiful one in bulovas, wakmanns etc. i also have quite a few more "dressy" watches but no zodiacs--YET. time will tell.i still have a 1957-8 zodiac hermatic manual wind no date that i received from my parents on i believe my 13th birthday. white dial is getting discolored but running good. maybr a redial is in its future!?      JON

Every guy needs a good dress watch - and these are great for casual/office.

Butch got me thinking about these watches quite hard, then happened to mention that there was also an SSt version..well we all need to have another grail out there somewhere.
There are a couple up on ebay the monent. These are quite difficult to figure out price and condition wise. If i was looking at a more recent Sea wolf or Astrographic ect, its quite a bit easier to figure out what to bid. Also with these watches, the possibility of a nos dial or crown is pretty low.

First watch is from a seller in the phillipines and looks as if it has been handed down through the years and was only taken off a wrist to take the photos. Crown looks well used  :o and stem could be an issue.

Now the second one from Raj could be more like it.

I know this is not exactly the correct forum for looking at auction watches, but how would you appraise / select a fine Olympos model for purchase?

Of the two, I would go with the second. Have one like it as a matter of fact.  It will not go cheap though. Restored and a warranty is a hard deal to beat.

i agree-the second one is your best bet.all stainless and already serviced from a seller we know and trust! the gold one looks like it may have a crown problem-it is REALLY worn--probably came off a different watch.

The first one looks worn... though Big Ben Watches is selling that watch for $185 on their site if anyone wants to avoid the ebay process. ebay is at $197 right now...
