Title: Zodiac Dials... what paint or process used?
Post by: stefaninla on December 20, 2021, 02:34:29 PM
Hi,

I'm curious if anyone knows what paint or lacquer, etc. was used on Zodiac dials? (black dial, specifically)?
Also, are there any special techniques or tricks, (beyond the usual extreme care and gentleness) that people use to clean dials?

Thanks!

I do believe it was lacquer. Most people do not clean or even touch the dials as you can cause more damage than good sometimes. Most watchmakers just use a puffer tool when reassembling.

Thanks for reply. Yeah, dial "cleaning" is dangerous stuff. I've experimented with distilled water, baby oil, etc. on cheap watch dials, but on something like a Zodiac dial, would ask a lot of questions before (not) doing anything. :)

Classic Sea Wolf dials will not tolerate water or oil
