Title: Help identifying my grandfather's zodiac hermetic
Post by: jinx on November 19, 2020, 03:41:48 AM
Hi all,
I would really appreciate if some kind person would help me identify my grandfather's old zodiac hermetic manual wind watch. I have been searching everywhere for information but without luck...
One big problem is that the caseback has been missing for over 30 years and I can not find the numbers to help me identify it. It is a retirement gift from the company where my grandfather worked most of his life. I think it is from mid 60s but I have no more information.

Please help me get as much information as possible! I would really like to replace the caseback so that I can wear it again but I don't know how to find an appropriate replacement. I've been searching on eBay for 2 years without luck.

Have a super day y'all!

That is an early 1960's manual wind dress watch. The original case back was probably engraved with his name and service dates. Looks like it took a snap back. Zodiac sold models called presentation watches where the case back was smooth for engraving. Have you tried a watchmaker? Sometimes they have a junk box for stuff like this. At this point, any case back that fits is what you need. Along with a service before you wear it of course.

Thats a lovely watch.

When talking to local watchmakers make sure they take vintage watches seriously. Many can't be bothered. But there are specialist out there who would love to help. If you are located in Sweden (as your profile picture indicates) and in the south I can recommend a few in Copenhagen - once borders are opened up again.

Thank you for the tip sir!

Unfortunately, I live in Gothenburg so I dont think Copenhagen is a realistic choice.. But if I happen to go there in the future I will keep it in mind! Copenhagen is always lovely to visit!

Yes I know most "watchmakers" these days can basically only change batteries and not much more. But there is one watchmaker close by that I know is competent.
