Title: Aerospace GMT bezel question
Post by: N8N on April 18, 2022, 08:49:01 AM
Good morning all,

I recently purchased a Bakelite bezel Aerospace GMT, which I received Friday.  Unfortunately, in its trip to me, the seconds hand came loose and was floating around on top of the dial on arrival.  It also had the wrong crown and was stiff to wind (I knew about the crown beforehand and I felt that the sale price reflected this.)  I've decided I am going to go ahead and keep it though as cosmetically it is far better than anything else I see on the market right now even for a much higher price.

I've already been in touch with BWG and will likely be sending him the watch to be made right.  However there is one thing I noticed about it that I find odd.  The bezel has 60 clicks as you rotate it, which would make sense for a diver's watch with a minute timing bezel; however with a GMT if I use it to track GMT it is less than ideal - let's say as is the case now, I am at EDT or GMT-4, the "4" lines up perfectly with the index.  However, when we go back to standard time in the winter and I'm at GMT -5, the "5" will be off slightly one direction or the other.  In other words, due to the number of clicks, only the even hours will line up perfectly with the indices; the odd ones will always be halfway between two clicks.  I'd think that a GMT watch should have 24, 48, or 96 clicks (or some multiple of 24.)

Is this just an artifact of the Aerospace GMT having been based off of the contemporary Sea Wolf, and the same bezel was used to cut costs?  I hope so, because the insert is perfect at least without magnification.

I never thought of this "issue" before but now if I ever buy another GMT watch I'm definitely going to be cognizant of it!

Thanks!
