Title: Another Odd Beitling Connection
Post by: Cobber on August 13, 2012, 12:34:26 PM
Item #: 221099276599

This one may belong in the Clebar forum.  However, coming hot on the heels of the Breitling/Zodiac moon phase I was thinking more of the overall connection this may represent as far as Zodiac is concerned.
Item actually says Breitling/Clebar on the dial.  I've never been aware of any official collaboration between Zodiac and Breitling but can't help but wonder what the deal here is.  I thought Zodiac was responsible for supplying all of Clebar's time pieces.

That auction number is for Jon's GMT.

Zodiac did make the Clebar brand for Trauner and Sons in NYC. As far as I know there was no connection between Breitling and Zodiac. (Discounting that limited run thingie from last week. That was probably as UV said, just a lot of movements that were found and used for a rediculouly priced limited run fund raiser.)

sorry about that, forgot I went to look at the Jon's post after I copied the Clebar one.  For anyone interested the correct item # is listed above.

Weird for sure. Maybe UV can shed some more light. I was prepared to say a misdialed redial but having looked at it, that dial seems so evenly aged that if it was redialed it was LONG ago. FWIW, this is the first time I have seen one of these, but then I do not look at Breitlings nor chronos that much.

Why would it have Clebar on the dial, under Breitling, and have a Breitling stamped movement? I don't think that was the model name. I aslo have no idea then Zodiac started the Clebar brand, other than that I have a Clebar catalog from the early 60s.

P.S.
Just looked at the price. Seeing that I definately would not have even gone in and looked at it. I do not think that old Breitlings (should?) demand and get that level of a price.

P.P.S.
But then the guy across the street say's the same thing about Zodiacs, especialy them See Woofs!

That is a cobbled together watch (very common offering from Argentina, Ebay is packed with quite a few of them from that region that are just "not quite right").  The case is not marked Breitling at all, and does not have the usual markings from a Premier of that era.  The "Breitling Premier" marking on the bridge is recent, crude, and not original.  They tried to do it in the correct style, but look closely at it.  It is not smooth and factory, it is really roughly done.  The dial is a combination of an older redial and new additions.  Look at how decent some of the timing track is, then look at how sloppy "shock protected" is.  Not evenly printed at all.  Look at the hour marks on the hour counter, about half of them reach the edge of the register and the other half do not.  So, all in all it is a put together watch that is only truly worth parts.

:agreei

Vintage Breitling and Heuer chronographs are way overpriced.  Collectors value them like they are actually rare, when Ebay and watch shows are just overflowing with them because they were made by the tons.  Definitely one of the areas the hobby is upside-down on.
