Came across this German article about dive watches: http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=sv&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rruegger.ch%2Fdive_watch_history.htm. (http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=sv&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rruegger.ch%2Fdive_watch_history.htm.)
Scroll down and in the right margin you will find a SSW with GMT function (http://www.rruegger.ch/images/dive_watch_library/zodiac_seawolf_1000_contemp.jpg (http://www.rruegger.ch/images/dive_watch_library/zodiac_seawolf_1000_contemp.jpg)).
It looks like a mod, since the font on the bezel doesn't look at all like the original. Also looks like the original font were blasted away leaving that rugged, non-shiny surface (which could have been polished to look more like the original). Also the hour hand does not seems to be original.
I think it looks quite good. Would look even better with a more fitting font on the bezel, but that bezel is indeed perfect for a GMT-watch.
But Zodiac never released a GMT-version of the SSW, did they?
Interesting. I have never seen nor heard of this. It is not NONE of my many 1990's catalog. It is possible (VERY remote!) that this was a kludge produced as a prototype that never got any traction within the company, but I doubt even that, just a though.
Also looks like the crown is unsigned so that lends to your argument.
Don't take this for gospel truth, as it's been a long time since that one came up first, and my memory is hazy, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that Roger either fotoshopped that just for fun, or found the image where someone else had. As I remember, he never intended it to be taken seriously. If you contact Roger Ruegger directly, he would likely explain whether it actually was a real prototype, or just some fotoshop fun.
If it really WAS real however, that would imply that the prototype might still exist somewhere.
PS: I got my hopes up once over what appeared to be a deep blue dialed SSW in a catalog picture, but it turned out to be a trick of the monitor.
:o if it is a fake it sure looks fantastic, look at the engraving on the bezel and the gmt hand is pointing to the correct time!!
