old Jumbo handwind with subdial

I got this neat Zodiac handwind :)
It's quite big: (about 38mm)

Nice on the wrist: (lot of wear of the goldplating)

Caseback:

And the movement (seller's pic) I already tightened the loose screw on the right.

The primitive shock protection of the balance axle makes me think it's late 40's?

I do not know for sure, but the serial number makes me think LATE 50's or early 60's. So do the hands. BUT, I would think you were correct were it not for the back. The back bothers me a lot though. Almost makes me think the back may be from another model/watch.

I have not seen this model before.

hmm... The caseback seems to fit perfectly, with an indentation for the case tube. (crown tube?) It looks like it has been with that case for a long time. (I took a quick pic with crappy lighting, but you can even see some service marks)

Butch

I feel better about it as you showed the inside to me. The earlier case numbers were only 3 digits. And interesting specimen for sure.

Very interesting indeed! So we're back to late 40's? The absence of any markings under the balance would indicate an early caliber too. Some markings might be found under the dial on the base plate, but I'm reluctant to remove the dial.

Butch

<shrug> We're back to the serial number being too high for the 40's.

ahh well, I like the watch anyway  :) It would be nice to know the age within a decade, but I'll keep and wear it regardless of the age.

:woohoo; that is a very classy looking zodiac, i like the style of the dial! i bet it could use a service if you are going to wear it.

Butch

I used to own one like this. Not sure where it got off to though. Note the serial number.

note to self...you might have too many watches, if that is possible

Butch

Too many watches? You're dangerously close to sounding like my old lady jmh....

I haven't got that many Zodiac watches, about eight. Nothing compared to the about 100 other watches I have  :wehe
