What about this Zodiac Super Sea Wolf? Legit?

I just noticed this add on Ebay: 285810599268

Love the watch, but I wasn't aware they produced a Sea Wolf with the 86 movement in 1969. Any thoughts?

Ultra-Vintage

I am not sure about the 1969 year of production, as I associate the Caliber 86 with 1970s (I suppose 1969 is close enough).  However, the Caliber 86 is the movement I usually see in SSW Day/Date Ref  862-836

Grossisten

I think its a steep price, but hey, if it sells at that level, that is the price.

I also think - but I cannot be sure - that the box is NOT original. These smaller, brown boxes were introduced later, I'm thinking mid to late 70ies. I have always assumed that switching from larger red boxes was part of a design make-over that also included red dots on dials and marketing material. Often on brown backgrounds, like the box. I base this partly on other marketing material and other watches offered for sale AND on my own recollection of having unpacked several deliveries from Zodiac to my father's watch business. But this was very long ago... in 1969 I unpacked nothing, I had probably just learned to walk. The guarantee card is a little hard to decipher, are you sure it says 1969? If correct that would make it a very early Super Sea Wolf.

IMHO, I would offer that the 1971 catalog has a day only SSW. The 1975 cat has the day/date.

Of note, the paperwork shows it to be an 862 836 and the serial number 2.7 MM. I do wish they had taken a better picture of that info, but it looks to me to be 1979, which would make it right for that serial number and box.

Thanks for your replies. Very difficult. I've been looking for a  Sea Wolf for a while, and like the condition, but it seems almost impossible to be sure its truly a very early model with day/date or a much later model (which would probably make it overpriced at the current listing price).

The serial number starts with 2.794.

Day and Date indicators should be consistent in color. Usually both - orange.
Definitely - way overpriced.
